The Legend of why the Bittern is Thin

About sixty million years ago, two volcanoes erupted and the ocean floor rose
to form the island which is called "Guam" by its inhabitants.  During this vast
expanse of time, beautiful palms and dense jungles covered the rich volcanic
soil.  It was here that two blessed birds, the bittern and the starling, met in the
jungle and became very good friends.
One day, the birds decided to fast on the blessed holiday of Good Friday.
They were to go all day without a single morsel of food.
The starling, bound by the agreement, didn't eat a single bite of food all that
day.  The bittern, however, couldn't go all day without something to eat.  When
he thought no one was looking, he devoured a very thin lizard that was lazily
strolling in the jungle.  When  the bittern ate that lizard, he was condemned to
be thin for the rest of his life, no matter how much he would eat.
Should you journey through or wander along the lovely shores of Guam, you
will discover that the bitterns are still under the spell and will remain so until
the end of time.
