The Legend of the Coconut
A long time ago, there was a Chamorro family which was a member of the Achoti Tribe. The family had a charming and beautiful daughter who was admired by every member of the tribe.
One day, the girl became very thirsty. Everyone in the village tried to find the fruit which the girl described, but no one could find such a fruit. A short time after becoming ill, the girl died.
The father buried the girl high on a hill overlooking the village. At the head of the girl's grave was a beautifully carved head stone surrounded by the pretty flowers placed there by the people of the village.
On bright sunlit day, one of the people of the village noticed a strange plant growing on the girl's grave. The people thought it must be magic, so they built a shelter over it to protect it from the weather.
In five years the plant had grown to a height of 20 feet. One day, one of the strange-looking fruits dropped to the ground and cracked open. The people of the village gathered around to see this strange looking fruit that the magic tree had produced.
The chief called on the father of the dead girl to eat the strange fruit. He refused and called on his wife to eat the fruit. She drank the liquid and ate the fruit, saying it was very sweet and chewy. She then called it coconut. It remains one of the main foods eaten by Guamanians.
