While Guam was still very young, the island divided
into two kingdoms.
One day a great famine struck the island. With food nearly exhausted, each ruler decided to go to the opposite end of the island to search for food. The ruler from the south packed his bag with a small portion of food and started toweards his brother's village. He also had his three children and the three strongest men of his village with him. Unknowingly and at the same time, his brother, the older ruler, packed his bag with a few scraps of food. Accompanied by his three children and several strong men, he head south. In the middle of the island, the two brothers
met. Neither group of people had eaten for two days.
The children, who were very tired and hungry, were put to bed for the evening while the men talked late into the night. Arising later than usual the next morning, the men learned that all of the children had died in their sleep In sorrow the two rulers buried their children. After the ceremony, they placed a latte stone at the heads of their children's graves. In sheer exhaustion, they collapsed. When the men awakened, they saw a strange tree growing at the head of each grave where the latte stones had been. They ate the fruit of the tree and called it breadfruit. From that day on, there has never been a famine on the island because of the miracle of the breatfruit tree. Today the breadfruit is eaten by the people of
Guam.
