The Legend of the Fragrant Lady

A long time ago, after the Spanish occupation of Guam, there was a mysterious woman who lived in the wilderness above the area which is now called Nimitz Beach. Almost every evening, the lady would come down from her mountain home to bathe in a swimming pool near the edge of the reef at Nimitz Beach. Usually on moon-lit nights, the woman would go to the beach and would pass near a shack where a family lived. In the early morning hours, members of the family would awaken and smell the sweet fragrance of a lemon-like scent. They believed the pleasant smell came from the mysterious lady who lived in the jungle.

The family wanted to find out the source of the n ice smell and to learn about the lady's routine. To find out, the father built a temporary bed under a tree near the trail leading from the seashore up to the hillside. Being very anxious to know the source of the scent, the father stayed awake and waited for the lady to pass by. Although he yawned sleepily, he stayed awake. After several hours, he finally noticed that something was coming down the trail from the jungle. To his surprise, the man noticed a lady dressed in a semi-white garment, walking down to the seashore. Following her carefully, the man saw the woman enter the sea and wade out to a spot where there was an aquamarine pool near the breakers in the reef at Nimitz Beach. The man then returned to his post and waited for the lady to return. In about a half an hour, the lady finished swimming and bathing and started back to her home on the mountainside. As she approached the man who was hiding, the man could smell the sweet fragrance of the lemon-cent. He knew that she was the mysterious lady. The man followed her up to where he lived, but she kept walking and disappeared into the woods.
